Marina Sirtis is a group that play a mixture of synthpop and darkwave ... Here goes an interview with them ....

1) Tell us the members of Marina Sirtis and little bit from ur history as a band.

The members are Anders Larsson (programming), André Öberg (vocal, programming) and Martin Löfgren (vocal, programming).

The band was formed out of Innocencia in 1997. The first release was the EP “View from an Intergalactic Star” that received good critics in European zines in 2000. Our debut album “Delay and Depression” was released in November 2002 and at the same time we signed with the label Shadowplay Electronica.

2) Why did you choose the name of the Greek actress Marina Sirtis for your band?

After looking for a new name for over half a year the name Marina Sirtis appeared in the discussions. Even though it was also the name of the actress of the character Troi in Star Trek we choose this name. This was not really a tribute to her, it just sounded good. Now we sometimes regret this choice as we are always associated with Star Trek.

3) And why did you choose Lesvos to be on the booklet of your latest album?

The concept of using old maps emerged early in the process of designing the booklet. Many countries appear in the booklet. The island Lesvos was chosen on the cover for two reasons. Firstly it just looks good. Secondly Anders has visited the island and almost remained there.

4) What would you say to present Marina Sirtis to those who dont know you?

We play a mixture of synthpop and darkwave not trying to make instant hits but rather songs that creep up on you with a mystic, dark and warm atmosphere.

5) Which bands do u think that influenced your work?

André: Mark Almond, Nick Cave, Human League, Pet Shop Boys
Martin: The Cure, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Twice a Man
Anders: Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Olle Ljungström, Kraftwerk

6) What's your favourite song from your latest album and why?

We can hardly choose and not really motivate. We have heard the songs too many times to remember what caught on the first time.
André: Stranger than Your Eyes
Martin: Plain
Anders: Pretending

7) I've noticed that u r playing a wide range of melodies(sometimes they r really poppy&sometimes really melancholic) so it is hard for someone to define your music. What's ur definition of it?

We tried to make the album homogenous choosing more melancholic songs from a much wider range. We do anything from much more poppier synthpop than displayed on the album to really dark goth. We don’t see any reason to limit ourselves.

8) Lots of things r said for ur live performances. What exactly are u trying to achieve from a performance like this?

Our original thought was that the audience never gets into the music the first time they see a band. Therefore we choose to also focus on the newcomers. When making a spectacular performance all of the audience can get into the show. Both old fans enjoying the music and seeing the show as an additional treat and the newcomers just enjoying that we love giving them a good time.

9) What's ur plans for the future?

Conquer the world, making a European tour and start recording our next album.
